Bad Breath
There are three identified types of bad breath:
Real Bad Breath
Bad breath is the most obvious odor from the outside and is divided into two types:
Physiological Temporary Bad Breath
Most of us experience bad breath when we wake up in the morning, and there's no specific disease that causes it. Saliva is normally an odorless secretion. However, due to factors such as a protein-rich diet, insufficient water intake, decreased saliva production, dry mouth, etc., bacteria settle at the base of the tongue and, especially at night, exploit the reduced saliva production to break down food residue, causing bad breath. This type of odor usually disappears with healthy eating and oral hygiene.
Pathological (Disease-Related) Bad Breath
Bad breath can occur due to dental and gingivitis, diseases of the upper respiratory tract (such as the nose, tonsils, nasal passages, sinuses, larynx, lungs, and esophagus), and upper digestive tract, as well as conditions affecting the entire body, such as diabetes, cirrhosis, and kidney failure. Once the underlying cause is treated, the odor usually disappears.
Fake Bad Breath
Bad breath is a smell that the patient claims to have even though relatives haven't detected it. The problem can be resolved by paying attention to oral hygiene and diet.
Bad Breath Phobia
It is defined as the person claiming that their breath smells after treatment, even though there is no odor, and psychological support is recommended for the treatment of the disorder.
How is Bad Breath Treated?
Bad breath treatment is achieved by eliminating the condition that causes the odor.
It is defined as the person claiming that their breath smells after treatment, even though there is no odor, and psychological support is recommended for the treatment of the disorder.
- If the odor is physiological, that is, temporary, bad breath, this type of odor usually disappears with attention to diet and oral hygiene.
- If the odor is caused by a disease, it usually disappears once the disease causing the odor is treated.
- The problem of false bad breath can also be solved by paying attention to oral hygiene and diet.
- If there is no odor and the person claims that their breath smells psychologically, then getting psychological help can provide a solution.
